The Barbados Association of Winnipeg, Inc. (BAW) was founded in 1977 by a young University of Manitoba student, Mrs Antoinette Zloty (nee Simmons) and members of the Barbadian/Canadian community. It was still only in its fledgling and informal stage when His Excellency Mr. Lonnie Taylor, High Commissioner for Barbados in Canada, hosted a reception in Winnipeg in June of that year. He was surprised to find that his countrymen in this city had not yet established a formal and thriving association as their counterparts had done in other major Canadian centers. The Association has grown increasingly active in community service over the years. It has become extremely keen to render assistance to other ethic organizations in Manitoba and has maintained very friendly relations especially with Caribbean groups in Winnipeg.
Much more than just the sun, sea and sand usually associated with a Caribbean island, Barbados has an incredible range of holiday activities for almost every interest and taste. In fact Barbados boasts of more attractions per square mile than any other Caribbean island!
